Why do I lead?

August 7, 2013 By Debra Lane,Ed.D.

George Couros asked us to relate to this question as kick-off for our School Admin Virtual Mentor Program #SAVMP. I am so excited to come back after being in China and be able to learn and lead among colleagues. This is not an easy question, it comes naturally to me and I constantly want to learn more.

Exceptional administrators inspire an environment of educational excellence and set priorities on learning for students, community members, other administrators and staff. They are role models who embody the mission statement of the school and demonstrate a daily commitment to staff and students. As instructional leaders, they regularly participate in classroom learning, ask questions, and gauge student achievement. By being good listeners, encouraging involvement, and developing teacher leadership throughout the school, high quality administrators deepen the connections among all stakeholders.

Our changing world grows increasingly complex. We can only imagine the specific needs of our communities or the demands of the job market for coming generations. What we can be sure of is the need for global citizens with transferable skills — students who know how to reason, imagine, think critically, communicate, and collaborate. I am ready to bring to a new school the vision, experiences, and energy to cultivate a school into a forward-thinking community, where learning is meaningful and children are paramount.

Technology is changing so quickly and we need to find avenues to bring each other along with our learning. I look forward to the coming year and beginning that adventure with my mentees and colleagues.
